Gene Engineering

Genetic Engineering Research I. Introduction In the past three decades, scientists have learned how to mix and match characteristics among unrelated creatures by moving genes from one creature to another. This is called â€Å"genetic engineering. † Genetic Engineering is a test tube science and is prematurely applied in food production. There are estimates that food output must increase by 60 percent over the next 25 years to keep up with demand. Thus, the result of scientist genetically altering plants for more consumption. The two most common methods for gene transfer are biological and electromechanical. â€Å"Early experiments all involved changing DNA using bacterial vectors†(Randerson, 2001). Through other advances scientists proclaim how they can improve the human gene pool. All humans have genes which carry certain traits structuring a person’s chemical make-up. â€Å"Inheritable characteristics are passed from one generation to the next through DNA, a molecule that is present in all of our cells†(Massey,2001). Gene Engineering could be used in various ways trying to improve humans. Gene modifications can have an impact solely on a single person (somatic manipulation), or on a person's children and all subsequent descendants (germline manipulation). Somatic manipulation seeks to change the genetic makeup of particular body in somatic cells that comprise the organs and tissues. Germline genetic manipulation changes the sex cells which can modify the health of a c†¦ †¦ middle of paper †¦ †¦ must be put in use for advances in reproductive technology and not to become available with bad intentions or misguided choices. Montesquieu and George Washington

Our national government, in my opinion, was structured by following the writings of Montesquieu. Montesquieu wrote that leaders could not be trusted to always do what was right for the people and that govenment should be structured to keep the leaders of the government from acting in a selfish manner and passing laws that would help a select few instead of the majority of the people. That is exactly the way our Founding Fathers thought when they were writing the Constitution.Montesquieu first had the idea of seperation of powers in a government. He thought if there were different branches of government, then no one branch would have too much power. He also thought that each branch of government should represent different groups of the population, so no one group would have all the power. Our government followed this almost exactly as he wrote it. We have the Congress which is divided up into two seperate houses, one being represented by people who are voted on by the population. How m any representatives there are, depends on the amount of people in an area. The other is voted on by the people, but are the same amount for each state. Montesquieu also believed in a checks and balances system, where one branch of government has the power to check on another branch, and that one branch could not force another to do what it wanted it to do, but it could make sure that the other branch was doing something it shouldn't do. I think our national government has followed this idea too.Our government is set up so that each branch can check on the other to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to do for the common good of the nation. Ours may go even further than Montesquieu's ideas, because our President has the power to Veto a law that has passed through Congress, but Congress can override his veto if they have enough votes. I think the men who set up our national government not only followed the ideas of Montesquieu, but believed his ideas were correct when stru ctering our government.

Eating in class Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Eating in class - Essay Example Also, students should not be allowed to eat in class because other students can become distracted. Time spent in the classroom should be for learning, so if one student eats then it will likely get the attention of other students. These students then may start to feel hungry and will not focus on the lesson at hand. Finally, students should be prohibited from eating during class because it is just plain rude. In most cultures when someone is eating it is a nice thing to offer food to the other people. If a student eats in class alone, then they are causing the other students to become jealous. Since it is wrong to share food in class, it is also wrong for one person to eat during class. Eating during class can be a divisive issue because there is no denying that people need to eat. However, there is a time and place for this, and the classroom is not the place for that. Most people are against students eating during class because the food can smell bad, other students may lose focus of the lesson, and it is rude to eat in front of

Art management - Essay Example On the same legal issue, during the tenure of the US president George W Bush, there was a tightening of restrictions around the Cuba embargo and it became a bit harder for US citizens especially to access artwork from Cuba freely as had been the case before. This was also as a result of lobbying by some members of families who had had their art confiscated by the Fidel Castro regime when he took power (Yulia, 2010). This is particularly true with the case of the Billionaire Fanjul family that had a vast collection confiscated and later sold by the Cuban government. They lobbied to have anyone trading in their artwork declared to be in violation of trading with the enemy laws put in place to prevent trade with Cuba but under which artwork was exempted. Another law that the Fanjuls and others are relying on in their quest to recover their lost artwork is the Helms- Burton Act which blocks people that deal in Cuban confiscated property and their immediate families from entering the United States and also opens them up to payment of potential damages. In this case there is the Argentinean art dealer Bruno Sciaoli whom they have ascertained to have in his possession one of their lost art pieces known as the Malaga Porta painted by Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida. This Act was however not acceptable to the European Union which then passed a resolution which prevents its enforcement within the EU. The issue of the law not being enforceable in the EU arises from the fact that the EU recognizes Cuba as a sovereign nation as well as its decision to nationalize assets which includes the confiscated art work. In the US its embargo laws prohibit trade in the confiscated properties from Cuba. If the state department tries and finds the art dealer Bruno Sciaoli guilty, then they will have opened a whole new era in the sales of this art works. It will have complicated any sales of artwork sourced from Cuba which is going on at

America and the Great War Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

America and the Great War - Essay Example (Stubbs, 2002) The rise of Pan-Slavism, which is a form of ethno-nationalism, in Eastern European countries had also precipitated the war. The strong diplomatic, economic and strategic interests in neighboring countries induced a cascade effect in terms of drawing reluctant participants to the war. The Great War was characterized by the long periods spent by the armed forces in â€Å"trenches†, so much so that the war is often described as trench warfare. This not only indicates the lack of sophistication in the art of war at the time but also the â€Å"stagnant† nature of this type of warfare. The recorded duration of the First war was close to five years, ranging from 1914 to 1919, most of this time was spent in combats that have reached a state of â€Å"stalemate†. (Kiesling, 2005) The First World War, also referred to as the Great War due to its sweeping scale, would shake-up then existing power equations within Europe and set up the region for the Second Wor ld War two decades later. While America's participation in the latter war was more substantial, it nevertheless played a crucial supportive role to its conventional allies in the former too. America’s support to the French cause would prove to be a major factor in the eventual outcome of the war. (Robert Bruce's book titled The Fraternity of Arms: America and France in the Great War traces this alliance and places it in the historical, political, ideological and imperialist contexts.) While Britain was witnessing a period of unprecedented prosperity and power during the beginning of the twentieth century and its connection to the United States goes two centuries further back, it was the alliance with France which was strategically important in the context of the Great War. This assessment goes against the grain of popular history, but nevertheless true. For example, the shared ideological basis of the two countries goes back to the Declaration of Independence on July the four th, 1776. The installation of the Statue of Liberty in Ellis Island, off the banks of New York, as well as the adoption of the democratic ideals of 'Equality, Fraternity and Liberty' into the American constitution are enduring symbols of this shared heritage. (Bruce, 2003) It is for the aforementioned commonalities that American public were in unison with their elected representatives' decision to join the war. At the beginning of the Great War, most of the American public was aloof to events on the other side of the Atlantic. This stands to reason, for there was no direct threat to American sovereignty and vested interests. Also, as the American demography was composed of various European ethnicities, joining ranks with one side might prove costly in domestic politics. But eventually, the shared ideological underpinnings between the United States, France and Britain proved to be an important factor in turning around public opinion in a quick time. (Kiesling, 2005) During the early months of 1918 the amalgamation controversy assumed its peak and it became uncertain whether Britain would receive any American help at all. But the ultimate victory for the Western powers was made possible due to their superior cohesion and coordination – something which their enemies could not achieve. So, despite America's Navy being very weak, its supply of troops to the Western cause was a decisive factor. And their successful integration under British and French

Islamic Politics and Culture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 1

Islamic Politics and Culture - Essay Example In fact Islamic dictatorship is prevailing in majority of the Arab countries. However, the recent revolutions in Libya and Egypt have forced many of the Arabs to think about a democratic political system in their country. However, the fundamentalists in those countries are against this idea. The concept of political Islam has been evolved out under the above context. According to Mohammed Ayoob, â€Å"Political Islam is a product of modernity as much as a response to it†(Rajesekhar). However, westerners are watching the dawn of Political Islam suspiciously. â€Å"In April 2014 Tony Blair urged the West to set aside its differences with Russia and China to focus on the growing threat from radical Islam† (Veerman). Westerners believe that Political Islamic movements are trying to destroy modernization and civilizations in the name of religion. This paper analyses the impact of the encounter between Western expansionism and Muslim-majority societies on the rise of politica l Islam. A crucial factor generating tensions in the West is the presence of ‘Islamism’ or ‘political Islam’, in all of its different manifestations, within Muslim communities. Islamism can be defined as "forms of political theory and practice that have as their goal the establishment of an Islamic political order in the sense of a state whose governmental principles, institutions and legal system derive directly from the shari’ah" (Veerman). The interference of religion in politics is unacceptable to westerners. They believe that religion should be separated from politics in order to create a stable and advanced society in a country. They have many examples to prove their arguments. For example, in countries such as Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, women get less freedom and power in politics and social life. Westerners believe that the over involvement of religion in politics is the major reason behind these problems. They try to empower

Brand Strategy and Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Brand Strategy and Analysis - Essay Example This helps to establish whether the brand meets the customers’ expectation and hence establish the need to modify or maintain the brand. Moreover, the managers can carry out an analysis on the customers’ data with a view of developing a marketing strategy that will communicate the brand messages to the target customers and help in predicting future market demands for the brand. For instance, the management can derive a strategic plan for the marketing department with an aim of helping them understand the customers’ needs and henceforth design a brand that meets those needs and reaches the customers in an effective way. Additionally, customers’ analysis helps in brand positioning through the analysis and understanding of different customer segments which defines their usage, needs, and experiences (Alameda County SBDC, 2013). Indeed, such an understanding clearly helps in creating brand strategy as the brand design seeks to satisfy each customer segment. Ho w a Competitor Analysis Helps In Creating a Brand Strategy A strong brand strategy is the one which positions the company’s strengths above its competitors’ weaknesses or the one which expose no threat to the competitors (Czepiel and Kerin, 2009). To achieve this, the company’s strategists must have adequate knowledge about competitors' strengths and weaknesses which comes through competitor analysis (Brown, 2010). As such, competitor analysis helps in creating a brand strategy. For instance, the strategists may seek to establish what the competitors does best and what they perform poorly with an aim of designing a brand strategy that will capitalize on the competitors’ weaknesses and dilute the competitors’ strengths with an aim of gaining competitive advantage. Indeed, brand strategy uses competitors’ analysis to establish a profile of opportunities and threats for the company against its competitors. In addition, competitor analysis has a goal of knowing all aspects of the competitor with a view of relating to them and designing a brand strategy that will address the competitors' probable actions and responses (Czepiel and Kerin, 2009). For example, the strategists can analyze the competitors’ mission statement and future policies with a view of using that information to develop a brand strategy that will position the company in a strategic position. Indeed, brand image and brand strengths are components of competitor analysis which significantly define brand strategy. Knowledge about the competitor’s current and possible future position is fundamental in the overall strategy of a company. More so, competitor’s analysis entails the competitors marketing strategy which helps in designing brand strategy. For example, the strategists may seek to know how, where, what, and who their competitors’’ advertisement target. Such information would be necessary for the company in devising a br and strategy for the future. Example of a Customer Analysis This is a customer analysis for a car manufacturing company. The customer analysis will address the market research, customer needs, and current or targeted customers (Jersey Business, n.y). Customer Needs Most car buyers seek for high quality, low maintenance, comfortable, and durable cars.

Special education collaboration, book reflection 2 Coursework

Special education collaboration, book reflection 2 - Coursework Example he particular help and support here is in the concept of how each member of the team can assist one another in achieving the departmental objectives, aims, and the set goals. In this paper am going to write a reflective essay on the events taking place in the story, but choosing a specific one, basing on what we have gotten taught in class. I have settled down to analyze and talk about the fact the author talks of Simon going to his office, in the BullsEye organization, on one of the weekends, Saturday. The main purpose of him walking into the office despite being a non-working day has shown us some levels of accountability towards competence in his job. The aspect of accountability gets further reflected when Simon realizes that John, his junior staff in the department he is heading, had also walked in earlier, to rectify on their wrongly done job. Accountability, as a factor of collaboration, has reflected on the fundamentals of collaboration that need to be kept in place in order o achieve the set group objectives and goals (Friend & Cook, 2010). The situation around this particular event that I have chosen came along as a result of one of the departments of the BullsEye organization, lead by Simon, failed to deliver as expected (Lundin & Nelson, 2010). The overall manager of the team had complained a lot concerning the poor performance of these particular departments despite the other units performing well above their targets set for them. The failure of this particular group to deliver as expected brought some reactions by the top management, and the next action to get taken was to change the head of this failed department. Simon could not believe this and had to spare his weekend time and walk into the office so that he could make some corrections on the faults made by his junior staffs. Upon reaching the room, Simon realized that John was also around to help him make corrections on some of the errors so that they could come up with some quality jobs

This can be a very difficult and time consuming process and the results may not satisfy the maximum amount of deaf students with needs. This project aims to develop an application that can be used by a school owner which will produce an XCode based on Arabic sign language to Arabic text. A number of factors must be considered in order to fit everything together in a schedule. The school owner of an institution will provide the data required for the project’s development. The application will process the data provided through calculations and comparisons in order to create an XCode that tries to satisfy the needs of the institution. Within this project it will be attempted to complete student scheduling based on various constraints. These constraints have been chosen and will be talked more at length in the paper. However, for now, we know that deaf students need to come on certain days, such as on Monday and Thursday, Tuesday and Friday, and Wednesday and Saturday. This would make three deaf students total so far. Another constraint is that one student will need to come with his brother although they are taught Arabic at different levels. Also, one student would be coming from 3 to 5 p.m., as he would not be able to come to class during working hours. Altogether, these constraints make six deaf students, possibly more if needed. What is going to happen is that code has been designed in order to reflect these variables using Prolog and tkXCode software. Additionally, the use of C++ code will help in the design of the coding for this project. The code for C++ will be run through the website codepad dot org, and from there appropriate code for Prolog and XCode will be developed. Constraint logic programming (XCODE) will be used

Therapist Perspective Paper Essay Example for Free

Therapist Perspective Paper Essay A sixteen year old teenager refuses to leave home and the therapist must review the situation from a MRI therapeutic approach. First, the MRI approach would not focus on the problem or how it developed but rather what efforts have the parent made to reach a resolution. MRI stems from the premise that families use practical attempts at resolving their situation but the attempts are ill-advised. MRIà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s main focus is aimed at dilemma driven solutions; there is no advantage in long term change or what capacity the problem serves within the family. Haley and Madanes derive from the same school of thought but with some differences. Haley interest lay in the power struggles that exist and believe the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“symptom such that the cost of keeping it up outweighed the gainsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . (Niolon, 1999) Madanes was worried about out of place hierarchies, where an adolescent uses problems to alter the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“behavior of parentsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . (Niolon, 1999) Both agree that families function within a hierarchical order, thereby reconstructing the hierarchical and boundary issues that will prohibit à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“dysfunctional feedback loops from starting, a sort of plan ahead strategyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . (Madanes, 1981) The belief is as families we have problematic stages to endure, in order to arrive at a resolution stage. A therapist using this approach would also focus on the parents, along with family interactions. Therefore, the reason Jose has the problem is the behavior he has been learned from his parents, he has developed a problem from his observation of how his parentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s interact and solve problems. The Milanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s school of thought is not solution driven but founded in the power struggles within the family dynamics that have occurred over a long period of time even through several generations enabling the familyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s problems to continue Techniques used for intervention in the strategic and systemic therapies are based in the belief that situations are keep up by à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“self-defeating patterns of behaviorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . (Madanes, 1981) Therefore, in order to effectively make change within the family, there must be a modification in the structure/dynamic of the family. MRI therapist believe that families or individuals are entrenched in their problems and need assistance moving forward. Therapist will assist the family and Jose in setting achievable behavioral solutions. Additionally, MRI models the concept of help the family to reach resolution with a particular issue and ignore other issues unless the family or individual specifically ask for therapy on the other issues. Moreover, one must set obtainable and clear objectives, and once this objective has been attained therapy will concluded. MRI therapist would inquire of the parents what strategies have they imposed to get Josh to go outside. (Nichols, 2012) Haley and Madanes objective is often a realignment of the hierarchy within the family and across generations; focusing only on the realignment that relate to the current issue. Meaning, the therapist will work on enhancing the relationship with Jose and his antagonistic parents. To achieve this objective the parents will need to discuss the problem that exist within their relationship in order to help Jose. Theorist believe that establishing trust within the family, allows the family to pay attention to the present issue. The difference with Haley and Madanes from MRI is the belief that once the present issue has been sustained/managed and trust established the exploration of other family issues can be dealt with. Furthermore, therapy can continue beyond resolving the current problem but can terminate once effective change has occurred within the fundamental factors that created the issue. The Haley therapist would focus on a dysfunctional triangle and the conflict between the parents. Additionally, Madanes would also be interested in the triangulation but would also focus on the fact that Josh could be protecting his parents. Milan held the basic belief that therapy effects change, and that the therapist is charged with the duty of outsmarting the family at their own games; by creating strategic methods that expose the families à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“dirty gamesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ (Nichols, 2012) and then one can began to reshape the family purpose. Reshaping techniques help families understand or effect change by helping families view their situation through a different lens. Moreover, the therapist would locate the power alliances within the family and those alliances extending across generations which perpetuate or broker the families à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“dirty gamesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . (Nichols, 2012) In conclusion the therapist must understand the strategic and systemic approaches in order to effect change in Josh and his family. Sometimes it is necessary to dig beneath the surface of a problem and get to the root even if family member are uncomfortable disclosing family secrets that have been guarded for generations. Additionally, breaking family bonds and upsetting the cohesive alliances that have banded together for generations is an effective measure to get family members to reshape their actions and thought process.

Effects of Law Changes on Tourism Industry Essay -- Law Legal Tourism

This essay will discuss how recent changes in the law may impact the tourism industry, because the industry is extremely vulnerable when it faces these emendations in the regulations and this is why politics contributes towards these impacts. Governments constantly introduce different laws which every individual and business must follow or adapt to, organisations often have to change the way they operate due to new policies. These alterations cost lots of capital, in failure to follow the rules, organisations can face prosecution. For example if customers feel that the facility doesn’t meet their needs e.g. wheelchair users in a shop with not lift to access the upstairs section, they may feel discriminated and sue the organisation. The purpose of laws in the society is to protect the public and organisations as it allows to distinction in what is right and wrong, it also gives the authority to take actions against wrongness. According to Soanes and Stevenson (2006) law is a rule or system recognised by a country or community as regulating the actions of its member and enforced by the imposing of penalties. Howlettt (2010) stated that there are two types of laws: Criminal law which is concerned with offences against society at large crimes persecuted by the states, and these cases, if of non-serious nature, are heard in magistrate court but if of serious nature, they will be heard in the crown courts and tried by jury. Fulfillment is Gained Through Philosophical Thought Essay -- philosoph

Fulfillment is Gained Through Philosophical Thought The ability to think philosophical is the ability to truly understand and know ones surroundings and everything that influences those surroundings to the degree that knowledge becomes the ultimate understanding and appreciation of the surroundings without question. With this ultimate understanding, a philosopher is able to appreciate life and live life to a fuller degree than the average person. Unfortunately, becoming a philosopher or even recognizing a philosopher can be difficult. Therefore, in order to live a philosophical life, one must understand what philosophy is and have a clear perception of why they desire a life as a philosopher and the hardships that ultimately coincide with it. A philosopher is a person that desires one part of something no greater than the other. He eagerly and freely tries all kinds of learning and avidly wants more knowledge at all times. Unfortunately, a â€Å"true philosopher† can be confused with a person of similar characteristics, a person of sight and sound. The true philosopher is one that searches for the truth behind something that is, unlike the person of sight and sound that only sees or hears what is and then moves on to the next thing, only viewing and listening to it and only appreciating what they can see and hear. The true philosopher searches for the eternal truth behind what is or what is not in determination of reaching the ultimate conclusion on that which is. For example, if we use beauty as a subject, a person of sight or sound would view or hear something beautiful and know it is beautiful and enjoy its beauty and that is it; they would not however search or desire the nature of beauty itself (476 b-c). This is what separates a true philosopher from a person of sight and sound. Thus, a philosopher not only enjoys the object that is beautiful, but he appreciates the meaning of beauty, comparing it to other beautiful things, desiring and embracing the ultimate nature of beauty along with the physical object that is beautiful. The understanding of this beauty as itself allows the philosopher to fully and ultimately understand, like or dislike, or question or conclude anything that he may further want to comprehend on the subject of beauty. Thus, comprehension of this sort gives the true ph ilosopher knowledge of beauty rather than simple opinion. ... ...ot want to share the philosophical knowledge that the philosopher is willing to give because of their predetermined ideas and beliefs. Unfortunately, this refusal and harshness the majority exhibit towards philosophy is caused by those outsiders, rulers and guardians of the city, who do not belong and who have abused one another by indulging in quarrels and arguments in a way that is wholly inappropriate to philosophy (500 a-c). Until the time when philosophers control the city as guardians, they will have to be careful, yet dedicated, to the task of philosophical teaching and thought. With an ultimate understanding and appreciation of the surroundings a philosopher holds as knowledge, he is able to see the truest meanings of life. Unfortunately, not being appreciated by all people and having difficult times at reaching the true understandings for some things weighs hard on a philosopher. Yet, with his courage and high-mindedness, the philosopher is able to be patient with his hardships. Eventually, while forming an understanding and knowledge of everything that surrounds him, the philosopher learns to live a life of fullness, appreciating all that is and all that might not be.

Business Ethics and Social Responsibility Essay -- Business, Corporate

The notion of ethics deals with people’s behaviors within a company. Social responsibility involves a company’s moral obligations and the manner in which the organization makes its decisions. Although ethics and social responsibility are similar on a conceptual basis, each has its own unique characteristics that express their differences and its independence of the other. Ethics and social responsibility have to be present and coincide with one another for a business to be ethically sound. Ethics is the application of one’s personal beliefs and the impact on how a person makes decisions regarding the relationships involving a company. The most common agents that involve a person’s decisions are owners, employees, customers, clients, suppliers and communities, according to Robert Audi (Audi, 2009). A person’s beliefs are often the determining factor in whether an action is considered right or wrong. Although ethics are often not explicitly displayed, a person with any sort of moral belief tends to have a grasp about what is considered ethically right or wrong. These obligations attempt to create a mirror image of how one would expect to be treated themselves. Audi states that there are ten moral obligations that serve as a model for how to assess ethical dilemmas. The following obligations are moral obligations that help to assess ethical dilemmas: justice, non-injury, fidelity, veracity, reparation, beneficence, self-improvement, gratitude, li berty, and respectfulness (Audi, 2009). Once these moral obligations are engraved into someone’s mind, it is much easier for a person to make a decision based on ethical grounds. Financial reporting is an example of an ethical problem for an organization or business. Many busin... ... Ethics are mainly used by individuals as guidance in making ethical decisions. Social responsibility is dependent on ethics, but ethics is independent of social responsibility and can stand on its own. Works Cited Audi, R. (2009). Business Ethics and Ethical Business. How does Act One prepare the audience of Macbeth for the remainder of the play? Essay

William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a play rich in imagery with vivid words and phrases that conjure up emotionally charged mental pictures. The way in which William Shakespeare uses contrasting scenes, especially in Act One only makes these images more vibrant. The many soliloquies in Act One illustrate the ways in which Macbeth’s mind is tormented, however, it is also these soliloquies that make the audience feel sympathetic toward Macbeth and therefore make the play more tragic when Macbeth’s character flaws. This emotional hold towards the protagonist created in Act One, makes Macbeth one of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays not only to modern audiences but also to the 17th century audience. The First Scene prepares the audience for the rest of the play as it shows the witches or the weird sisters in an evil light; this thought is amplified by the use of thunder and lightning. The language that the weird sisters use also readies the audience for the remainder of the play. The weird sisters speak in riddles and prophesise future events. For example they predict that they will meet again â€Å"When the hurly-burly’s done, When the battle is lost, and won†. For a 17th century audience, where people believed it possible to summon the devil with such riddles, the apprehension that the audience already posses will amplify thus creating an anxious atmosphere within the playhouse. Nevertheless this prophecy gives the audience an insight into the remainder of the play and adds suspense as the witches use mysterious and menacing words, thus enticing the audience to continue watching. At the end of the scene the weird sisters chant ambiguous words such as â€Å"Fair is foul, and foul is fair† this again gives the audience the impression that possible strange and supernatural events are to come, therefore further drawing them into the play. The quote also infers that later on in the play it will be hard to distinguish between good and bad or, alternatively â€Å"fair† and â€Å"foul†. Shakespeare would have been aware that the reigning monarch at the time of the plays release, James I had a strange fascination with supernatural events and witches, even participating in the infamous Pendal Witch Trial. By pleasing the monarch in this way it would have helped William Shakespeare’s promotion of the play, therefore helping to popularise it. Another prediction that the witches make is in Act One, Scene Three where they predict great things for Macbeth; â€Å"All hail Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor† â€Å"All hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter† This prediction is very important for the foundations of the play, as it prepares the audience for murder and scandal and makes the audience more knowledgeable about what’s to come, than some of the characters. It is this dramatic irony that allows the audience to be able to make predictions about subsequent Scenes. The portrayal of the protagonist Macbeth at the start of the First Act is one of a heroic, valiant servant to King Duncan. The Captain describes him as â€Å"For brave Macbeth – well he deserves that name†. This rather glowing report gives the audience the impression that Macbeth is a loyal servant to the King, however the irony is that by the end of the Act he is plotting to commit regicide against Duncan. This contrast in character between courageousness and treachery makes the play gripping and exiting. The very first line that Macbeth says is â€Å"So foul a fair a day I have not seen† these words seem to echo the chants of the weird sisters in the first scene. This seems to indicate that even having not met each other the witches have a supernatural influence on Macbeth, maybe in his mind and it shows that the weird sisters and Macbeth resemble each other, even at this early stage in the play. The words also hint that conflict and insecurity exist in his mind even though he has just won a great battle. This gives the audience a view into Macbeth’s early thought processes, and this consequently readies them for the reminder of the play. When talking about killing the King, Macbeth uses less brutal euphemisms such as â€Å"the deed†, â€Å"this blow† and â€Å"my intent† this infers that Macbeth is not all evil and he wants to think as little about the proposed murder of Duncan as possible. This gives the audience the impression that he is not going to be the main villain in the play and suggest that there will be an external influence that pushes him to carry out the murder, as observed by Aristotle in which he lists the ingredients for a tragedy. However the end of Act One prepares the audience for evil things to originate through Macbeth, as in Scene Seven he struggles with his conscience. Evidently bad things do come through Macbeth in the lat er Acts, in fact in Act Three he says; â€Å"I am in blood stepp’d in so far, that, should I wade no more, Returning were as tedious as go o’er†¦Ã¢â‚¬ This tells us that Macbeth has done many terrible deeds and that if he were to go back and right his wrongs it would be as tedious as to go forward and carry on the tyranny. Thus his only option is to go forward to try and claim more glory. This terrible quandary that Macbeth finds himself in could be a bit of early political propaganda that William Shakespeare has slipped into the play to satisfy James I. The purpose of this subtly placed propaganda was to put-off any people who were scheming to commit regicide, at a time where there were many plots to kill the king; non-more famous than Guy Fawkes’ â€Å"Gunpowder Plot†. In the play when Macbeth does kill Duncan unnatural events follow, such as Duncan’s horses eating each other. Ross recalls the event and says that the horses â€Å"Turned wild in nature† and â€Å"flung out†. This indicates to audiences that killing the King will provoke God to inflict unnatural events upon the earth, therefore inferring that Kings do have a divine right, a view that was firmly believed by James the First. Lady Macbeth is portrayed as a scheming villain who is behind Macbeth’s murder of the King. The first thing that Macbeth’s â€Å"dearest partner of greatness† says is all about how to cause the downfall of Duncan for Macbeth’s and her own personal gain. She is portrayed as rather a manly figure who has an overpowering role over Macbeth. An example of Lady Macbeth’s male instincts is seen in Act One Scene Five when she calls on the sprits to â€Å"unsex† her and make he become more manly to assist her plan for Duncan’s murder. â€Å"†¦.unsex me here And fill me from the crown of the toe topful Of dearest cruelty; make thick my blood† This quote suggests to the audience that Lady Macbeth will be an evil unremorseful and ruthless character throughout the entire play; however ironically later in the text she becomes more conscious of her actions and Macbeth has more control over here. When her conscience returns she hallucinates and believes that she has blood on her hands. This is a massive contrast to what she told Macbeth when he was clearing the blood from his hands after Duncan’s murder; â€Å"A little water clears us of this deed†. This contrast suggests that she is regretting her earlier actions and is indeed being tormented by them. In the First Act King Duncan is perceived as a gentle, ideal king. For example when talking of Cawdor’s treachery his words are full of personal regret and he has no malice in them. His language is also full of gratitude for the service Macbeth and Banquo have performed. However ironically because he is so fond of Macbeth he rather naively does not see his murder coming and he is easily fooled by Macbeth’s and Lady Macbeth’s welcoming looks and flattery. To back up this point an example of flattery towards the King is when Lady Macbeth repeatedly refers to him as â€Å"Your majesty† which reinforces the idea of loyalty towards the King. The use of language by Lady Macbeth gives the audience the impression that she has a mischievous and cunning mind hence setting then up for later Acts. To conclude, at the start of Act One William Shakespeare cleverly misleads the audience into believing that the characters have sound morals, but as the play progresses we see this to be a faà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ade. The plot becomes exiting for the audience as there earlier assumptions are proved incorrect in later acts. Also William Shakespeare’s use of juxtaposing scenes, which contrast with each other, often ironically prepares the audience for unexpected and surprising events in the play. The themes of greed, power and conspiracy found in Act One of Macbeth prove to be as relevant for a modern audience as they were for a 17th century one. They have the effect of an audience questioning the limits they would go to, to fulfil there own desires. However by the end of the play these questions should have been answered.

Marianna Moore “Poetry” Essay

While reading this poem, at first it was difficult to completely understand what is happening or what is exactly is being told. I decided to break down sentence by sentence to make it easier and it helped bring out the poems true colors. â€Å"I too dislike it: there are things that are important beyond all this fiddle†. After reading this segment it points out to me that our speaker shares that she too doesn’t like it referring to the reader that they must not like it too since majority of people do not. The question is why does she say it and not say poetry. â€Å"Reading it, however with a perfect contempt for it, one discovers it after all, a place the genuine†. This tells me that the speaker explains that reading poetry with perfect understanding is hard and confusing, but its achievable to find a place inside your self that can appreciate it. â€Å"Hands that can grasp, eyes that can dilate, hair that can rise if it must, these things are important because a high sounding interpretation can be put upon them but because they are useful†. This specific passage explains to me that the speaker is telling the author that poetry can be so powerful and meaningful with the right keen hands to fully grasp it, and the right eyes that can see past it and find the meaning as well as the hairs on yourself that will tense up from the message of the poem and its way of creation. She also states its important cause with these abilities it is vital and important because they are useful not just for poetry but for other things. â€Å"When they become so derivative as to become unintelligible, the same thing may be said for all of us, that we do not admire what we cannot understand†. This tells me that its true that for people sometimes when we don’t understand something, it becomes unimportant to us because we don’t have that drive or push to make us understand it since its to hard or to confusing. The author is saying that for us, many do not understand poetry making us give up on it since we don’t full grasp the true understanding of it. â€Å"The bat holding on upside down or in quest of something to eat, elephants pushing, a wild horse taking a roll, a tireless wolf under a tree, the immovable critic twitching his skin like a horse that feel a flea, the baseball fan, the statistician† . This creates imagery in the readers head by giving examples of what the author is trying to convey and creates images in ones head. Its relating to how these examples are hard to understand but make sense in a way once you dig deep enough and find the answer to it. â€Å"Nor is it valid to discriminate against â€Å"business documents and school books†; This part shows me that even though we hate books and documents the purpose of it is to teach us something, so instead of hating it since its hard to understand, take time to see its purpose of making us only smarter. â€Å"All these phenomena are important. One must make a distinction however: when dragged into prominence by half poets, the result is not poetry, nor till the poets among us can be literalists of the imagination†. The structure of this creates the message to me that all phenomena in things are important but its hard to see at first, and it takes a close eye to see this distinction. By addressing that dragging half poets into prominence the result is not poetry, and neither till the poets among us can be literalists of the imagination pin points that all poets can create poetry but the good kinds are the ones with imagination and a voice to it. It doesn’t have to have this deeper meaning to it but has to be genuine to the poet and have something real to them. â€Å"Above for inspection, â€Å"imaginary gardens with real toads in them shall we have it. † This creates images in the readers head and creates that sense of imagery by giving it direction on how anything can be imaginative but adding reality to it can be worthwhile and she be taken for accounted for. â€Å"In the meantime, if you demand on the one hand, the raw material of poetry in all its rawness and that which is on the other hand genuine, you are interested in poetry. † The ending to this poem stands out to me the most because this part says that even raw poetry can be good, and having that rawness as a good thing can make it genuine since anything can be poetry but it has to be genuine. The speaker address the reader by saying if you can appreciate rawness in all its power, then you can appreciate poetry in all its rawness.

Do Video Game Kill

â€Å"Do Video Games Kill? † Since the released of a video game called Doom in 1993, certainly one of the most popular first-games shooters games. It is like a double-edged sword, because it does not help video gaming grow into a multibillion dollar industry, but is would teach kids how to kill. In â€Å"Do Video Games Kill? † sociology professor Karen Sternheimer talked about that the â€Å"video game explanation† for kids violence has become more pervasive. In this article, the author talked about politicians and 199 newspaper articles think that the video games teach young people how to kill and are the culprit. They blame video games. However, the author dose not think the video games are negative products. Because she thinks that guns, poverty, families, and the organization of schools may also influence youth violence. When we want to understand why young people, particular in middle-class or otherwise stable environments, become homicidal, we need to look a t what the games they play. â€Å"While all forms of media merit critical analysis, so do the supposedly ‘good’ neighborhoods and families that occasionally produce young killers†(244).Politicians and other moral crusaders created a name for video game, called â€Å"contemporary folk devils†, because they seem to pose a threat to children. Newspaper articles proposed that the video games are constructing culpability, and they are the culprit. But in author’s mind, she does not think the video games are not only way to teach young children how to kill. This is the biggest problem with media-effects research that â€Å"Poverty, neighborhood instability, unemployment, and even family violence fall by the wayside in most of these studies.Ironically, even mental illness tends to be overlooked in this psychologically oriented research† (16). For instance, African-American young people are involved more than twice as often as white in the juvenile j ustice system. So the author thinks poor males of color be killers easier than others. For example, many people now can not find job, so they just feel sad and lost their mind. They think it is unfair, so decided to kill others. So the video games are not only ways to teach killed. On the other hand, the author thinks playing video games can improves spatial skills and reaction time. When we play the video game, we need to improve our attention, and to decided some decision immediately, so playing the video games actually can improve our intelligence. She found evidence about the video games do not increase aggression. She uses some reports quotation to contract and then points out video games does not increase aggression. For example, â€Å" The Boston Herald quoted a clinical psychologist who said, ‘ Studies have already shown that watching television shows with aggressive or violent content makes children more aggressive’’(15). So the media effects are clear, consistent and conclusive. But the author thinks that news reports do not use academic sources to do the media effects research. In conclusion, the video games are not only ways to teach youth how to kill. They killed maybe because of poverty or families, because of unemployment or neighborhood. There are many other facilities to lead youth people kill. And the video games also have some positive sides, like it can improve the spatial skills. So it is not just like politicians and news articles thinking, the video games are not folk devils and are not culprit. ———————– 1

Cross Cultural Perspective †Nike Corporation Essay

Pakistan and Cambodia have strict child labor and slavery laws, however, the government has done very little to regulate it. Contracts for production are still being granted in areas of Pakistan where there is not sufficient monitoring or regulation to make sure that child labor laws are being observed and enforced. The United States Constitution deems that child labor is not only illegal but also inhumane and that any organization caught practicing or even encouraging forced labor or violating child labor laws will be prosecuted. The general thought process of Nike and many other global organizations is that they can operate their production with the lowest cost of labor. This leads the organizations to enter into violations of child labor laws. An investigation was conducted where Nike was found to have a large number of cases that involved forced labor or child labor law violations in some of the large apparel factories of Nike. In a particular factory in Malaysia, it was found that Nike was operating production in terrible working conditions for the employees in addition to the forced labor. It was found that Nike had underage children working in sweatshops up to seventy hours a week in unhealthy conditions making their products. Pakistan has a population of approximately 1 million people and it is also an important location or â€Å"hub† per say for the production of goods that are to be exported to international markets, this is especially true of the production and export of sporting goods which brings in revenues in excess of 300 million dollars a year. When confronted with the findings, Nike issued a statement stating that they would take corrective action to make sure that the child labor laws were followed and that they would not continue to operate forced labor and bad working conditions within any of their factories. Nike started focusing on their social responsibility efforts in areas in which they can have the greatest impact and create the greatest value for the organization and for the communities that the various factories are in. Nike has initiated the social responsibility efforts in the materials they design for their products, as well as the process of making those materials and products. An analysis of the ethical and social responsibilities Nike faced with global expansion had many factors that needed consideration. The first consideration was the cost of making their products. To stay competitive in their prices while not reducing the amount of employees, Nike, decided to outsource some of their manufacturing and suppliers on a global scale. This provided Nike cost advantage over their competition and it also allowed Nike to expand into emerging markets. Some could view this as unethical practice because it could take jobs away from manufacturing plants in the United States; however, Nike was acting in the best interests of the organization including its employees overseas and the employees back in the United States. If an organization does not maintain a competitive edge in their respective markets when expanding the organization not only in the United States but also worldwide, there would be no room for growth and jobs would be lost. When a company is no longer competitive in their respective industry, it can eventually cause them to shut down factories in their communities, which in turn can cause people to lose their of jobs. Nike’s social responsibility to the community includes the Nike Foundation. The Nike Foundation focuses on adolescent girls in developing countries. Nike has established custom product lines, marketing, events that have raised donations from consumers. Nike strongly believes that every young person in should have access to sports and has developed various programs and activities. Aside from the Nike Foundation, Nike has also developed several other programs as part of their social responsibility such as the Homeless World Cup (HWC), ninemillion and Let us Play in China. The Homeless World Cup (HWC) has supported locally-run football programs for homeless community members in more than 60 countries globally. In addition, 34 of these nations either plan or already have active national street soccer leagues running throughout the year (Nikebiz. com). The HWC training programs include technical training as well as assist the players with drug or alcohol dependency programs, finding jobs, finding homes and receiving education to name a few (Nikebiz. com). In 2006, NIKE, Inc. , partnered with the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR) and Microsoft to launch the ninemillion campaign through ninemillion. org to give more than 9 million children living in refugee camps access to better education, sports and technology (Nikebiz. com). The let us play in China program has partnered with China Children and Teenagers’ Fund, under the government-organized NGO Women’s Federation, on a program that empowers migrant youth and introduces more child-centered teaching methods through sports (Nikebiz. com). The Nike Foundation’s mission is to provide innovative programs that offer solutions for girls, by partnering with larger organizations to get girls’ issues on the international agenda and to mobilize resources to support them (Nikebiz. com). This promotes learning skills and the ability to work as a team. It creates the ability to adapt to situations that could arise in the work environment and in life; it also promotes confidence in playing sports. This is one of the most ethical things that a company can do to help develop the next generation. In conclusion, Nike has accepted that they have done some things in the past that have been rather unethical and have been damaging to their image, not to mention that it could have really altered their profitability.
